Armie Hammer, enjoying plaudits for his starring role in Oscar-buzzy “Call Me By Your Name,” will make his Broadway debut in June, starring with Tom Skerritt (“Picket Fences”) in Young Jean Lee’s dark comedy, “Straight White Men.” Anna D. Shapiro, a Tony winner for 2008’s “August: Osage County” and artistic director of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, will direct the production for Second Stage at its Broadway flagship, the Helen Hayes Theatre. The renovated theater will re-open in the spring.
“Straight White Men” is slated to begin previews June 29 and open July 23. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
The company describes the play this way: It’s Christmas Eve, and Ed has gathered his three adult sons to celebrate with matching pajamas, trash-talking and Chinese takeout. But when a question they can’t answer interrupts their holiday cheer, they are forced to confront their own identities in this hilariously ruthless look at the classic American father-son drama.
The creative team includes Todd Rosenthal (set), Suttirat Larlab (costumes), Donald Holder (lighting), M.L. Dogg (sound) and casting by Telsey + Company.
