Did ‘Mother!’ cause J.Law and Darren Aronofsky’s split?

A movie might have been the reason Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky‘s relationship ended.

The actress starred in the Aronofsky-directed “Mother!” — which sharply divided critics and audiences this fall — and described how negative reviews took a toll on them.

“We’d be on the tour together, I’d come back to the hotel and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is the movie, and he comes back and that’s all he wants to talk about,” Lawrence told Adam Sandler for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “I was doing double duty of trying to be a supportive partner while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about “Mother!” for one second?’”

She admitted that hearing bad press coverage from Aronofsky made her shut down.

“And then he would start reading me reviews, and I finally was like, ‘It’s not healthy. I’m not going to do it, because if I read it, I start getting defensive.’ Especially because it’s my man,” she continued. “I don’t want to sound in an interview that I’m defending what we’re doing in any way. It’s awesome, what we did. The people who hate it really hate it. But it’s nothing that needs to be defended. If I read a negative review, I just feel defensive.”

J.Law, 27, and Aronofsky, 48, split after a year of dating earlier this fall. Insiders close to the pair told Page Six that the split was not because of the film, but that the director and Lawrence were at different places in their lives.

“They had fun — they had a great trip,” said a source of the relationship.

“They made something beautiful together that they both think is their best work,” the insider added of the film.
