Ed Asner asked Larry David for his job back on ‘Curb’

In a twist worthy of a “Curb Your Enthusiasm” plot, Ed Asner — the 87-year-old former “Mary Tyler Moore Show” star — told the audience at a 92nd Street Y talk that he asked creator and star Larry David to bring him back to the HBO hit this year — even though his character died on the show back in Season 2.

(“Curb” just returned for its ninth season after a hiatus.)

On the show, Asner played the father of a broke former “Saturday Night Live” writer who tells David that his dad has serious heart troubles and will die soon — but won’t give his son any money until after he’s dead. So David advances his pal $5,000 to be repaid when his father dies.

Also at the Asner event was former “Mary Tyler Moore Show” writer/producer Ed. Weinberger, who recalled visiting the White House during the Gerald Ford administration.

“He said that when they walked into a Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting, all the military brass cut short their planning session — complete with maps and miniature ships — to rush over and ask Mary for her autograph,” a spy said.

Asner and Weinberger’s new book is titled “The Grouchy Historian.”
