John Slattery speaks on gun control at ‘Newtown’ screening

John Slattery hosted a luncheon at Le Cirque on Monday for “Newtown,” a new documentary on the tragic 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

“I’m a parent,” the “Mad Men” star told us. “What happened there is every parent’s nightmare, but it’s not just the parents’ nightmare — it’s the teachers, the people involved in that community.”

He added on gun control, “I’m for living a peaceful life . . . I don’t want to take anybody’s guns away, and I don’t want to tell anybody how to think. I also don’t want my son, my family, or your family to get hurt. It’s entirely preventable . . . It’s an emotional statement, not a political statement.”

Mark Barden, the father of Daniel Barden, who was killed in the tragedy at age 7, told attendees — including the film’s producer Maria Cuomo Cole, Mary Stuart Masterson and Deborah Roberts — “I don’t want you to look at me like a broken victim . . . There’s hope. I am encouraged by that.”

The movie will screen in more than 500 theaters nationwide starting Nov. 2. On that day, Cole’s brother Chris Cuomo will moderate a live Q&A at Lincoln Square AMC after the film.
