Anthony Bourdain: It’s now safe to order fish on Mondays

“Don’t order fish on Mondays” is one of Anthony Bourdain’s most famous pieces of culinary counsel, but it’s not true anymore, he said.

“I never order fish on Monday,” wrote Bourdain in his 1999 memoir “Kitchen Confidential,” explaining that restaurants often work with supplies purchased the previous week. To this day the advice haunts many a sushi restaurant.

But when questioned about the advice by Anderson Cooper at Cannes Lions 17 years later, Bourdain admits it’s no longer accurate. “That was 1999. The world has changed now.”

“Maybe if you’re eating in an Irish pub, don’t order the mussels on Monday on special, but in most places [the food is fresh],” Bourdain said.

“‘Don’t eat fish on Monday’ will unfortunately be on my headstone.”
