Deadline founder Nikki Finke is backing Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton will be gripping and grinning with Democrats in Los Angeles on June 19, but Nikki Finke won’t be one of them.

The feared Deadline Hollywood founder is supporting her fellow Wellesley grad — the first time Finke’s ever backed a candidate — but told me, “I have no desire to go to any fund-raiser. I don’t need to be in the same room.”

The day before, on June 18, President Obama goes to dinner at Tyler Perry’s house in Beverly Hills. Then, Hillary will be at the homes of Janine and Peter Lowy of the Westfield real estate company, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo and his husband, Sonny Ward, and poker-playing “Seabiscuit” star Tobey Maguire and his jewelry-designer wife, Jennifer Meyer.

Finke, 61, said, “I have assiduously avoided ever supporting candidates because I don’t think journalists should. But now that I am giving up journalism, I will exercise my right to be politically active. It’s time we had a woman in the White House.”

Finke recently announced that she’s launching the Web site hollywooddementia.com — featuring “short stories, novellas and novel excerpts written by Hollywood insiders” — following her acrimonious split with Deadline owner Jay Penske.
