American artists fêted in Madrid

White House interior designer Michael S. Smith and his partner, US Ambassador to Spain James Costos, opened their newly decorated Madrid residence to visiting American art heavyweights last week.

The dinner honored Studio Museum in Harlem director Thelma Golden, Glenn Ligon and Chicago-based Theaster Gates, visiting as part of the Art in Embassies cultural exchange program.

Toasting the visitors were collectors and curators including Carmen Giménez, MoMA trustee Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, billionaire Juan Abelló and Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The artists were honored again the following night at Harper’s Bazaar Spain’s relaunch for 450 guests.
