Writers table

After being uncharitably blocked from using the late Elaine Kaufman’s name, a group of her restaurant’s devotees will now name their new literary charity The Table 4 Writers Foundation in her honor. Table 4 was known as “the writers’ table” at Elaine’s. Diane Becker, the former manager who inherited Elaine’s, then shut it, forbade the board from putting Kaufman’s name on the organization to help emerging writers. While the board got legal advice and found Becker had no grounds to stop them, they still came up with the new moniker. “We wanted to take the high road,” said board member Jenine Lepera Izzi. Their first fund-raiser will be Feb. 10 at Midtown’s Cibo.
