On June 30 Joe Pesci makes his long awaited return to the big screen with “Love Ranch,” one of the summer’s most anticipated films. It not only marks the Oscar winner’s first movie in four years (although if we’re being honest, it’s more like 12 since his “Good Shepherd” role was minuscule) but also the first time Oscar winner Helen Mirren has acted in one of her husband’s films (she’s married to Oscar winning director Taylor Hackford).
Man, golden guys all around, huh?
And I suspect that the golden shower will keep flowing with this film since The Academy loves true life stories — and the misadventures of Nevada’s first brothel owners is based on real events. On-screen both Joe and Helen are endlessly watchable. But it’s new face Sergio Peris-Mencheta that will churn up the most chatter.
As the boxer that eventually drives a wedge between Helen and Joe’s characters, the Spaniard steals all of his scenes and promises to leave women fumbling for the nearest cigarette. He’s got that Javier Bardem-ness working in his favor.
