ELIGIBILITY
The Applicant must be one of the following:- a graduate of the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (or an earlier Occupational Therapy program) at the University of Toronto, or
- a faculty member in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (staff or status-appointed), or
- a student in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, or
- a student in the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute who is either an occupational therapist or is working under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, or
- post-doctoral fellow working under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department (staff or status-appointed)
NOTES:
- Co-applicants need not be affiliated with the Department or with the University of Toronto
- Researchers and Clinicians affiliated with GIPPEC (Global Institute of Psychosocial, Palliative and End-of-Life Care) are encouraged to apply
- Previous award recipients are eligible to apply

Application Materials
Formatting: 8 ½ x 11, single spaced, 12-pt font, 1-inch margin on all sides
Applications should include the following, as appropriate, considering the nature of the submission:

- Description of proposed project: one page, excluding references, using the following headings: Background and relevance of research; Research question and objectives; Methods; Plans for dissemination, knowledge transfer
- Full budget with justification for each item
- Appendices including questionnaires, interview guides, or data collection forms, etc.
- Curriculum vitae of principal investigator, or the faculty supervisor if applicant is a student
- Description of research team and why they are appropriate for the grant (250 words)
- Signatures of all applicants on the submission, attesting to their agreement with it, provided on a separate page
- Letters of support only if they are absolutely essential to the project
Review Process
The Department of OS&OT’s Research Committee will evaluate the merit and feasibility of the proposed research. The Committee’s decision will be made by August 17, 2023. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
- Potential for the project to add to the knowledge base in the field, or disseminate existing knowledge
- Quality of proposal
- Feasibility of completing the project within the proposed budget
- Appropriateness of the research team
Release of Funds
For studies involving human participants, no funds will be released until approval by the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board and/or other research institute/hospital Research Ethics Board has/have been received. Please send a copy of your research ethics approval letter to Dayna Frydman, Research Services Coordinator: ot.researchservices@utoronto.ca.
Final Report
- A written report must be submitted to the Research Services Coordinator by September 16, 2024.
- The written report shall be a one-page summary of the work completed, preliminary findings, and a list of completed or planned dissemination activities
- Recipients must acknowledge The Judith Friedland Fund in all publications or presentations of their work stemming from this award.
