George Gateley Obituary

George Claiborne Gateley went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1, 2024, following a lengthy illness. George was born on November 25, 1946, in Alexandria, Louisiana, to Glynn H. and Clara Gateley. After graduating from Central High School, he enrolled and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1970. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1972. George began his professional career in the insurance industry where he earned his Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1982. He retired in 2016 as the Chief Operating Officer of Southern National Life, a subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. George attended and volunteered at Healing Place Church. Anyone who knew him quickly learned of his passion for bass fishing, especially participating in bass tournaments. He fished from Alaska to Costa Rica, but his favorite spot was Toledo Bend. George is survived by his daughter, Jamie L. Gateley; sister, Harriet Roberts; three stepsons, who he cherished, and numerous nieces and nephews. His nephew, George Robert Gateley, was like a special son to him. His caregiver, Shirley Cann, was a source of loving care to George, and his wife, Jo Ann, who predeceased him. In addition, George is predeceased by his parents, Glynn and Clara Gateley; and brother, Kenneth Gateley. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Resthaven Funeral Home beginning at 9:00 AM until services at 11:00 AM, officiated by Pastor Johnny Green. Burial to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. George was always quick to seize an opportunity to share his belief in his risen Savior, whose arms he is now at peace in.

Years ago George told me that he asked for a humble task for service to GOD at Parkview and so he set up chairs & programs for church every Sunday. He also told me that the highest honor he could receive here on earth would be for people to say he was a good man. Well, George, you really were a good man. The last time I spoke with him, he was suffering from the alzheimers & said ' you know I won't remember our conversation later' - I told him I was just happy to talk to him right then. He really was a good man.

George and I were both in the Class of '64 at Central. We also lived in the same neighborhood, rode the same school bus and our families attended the same church. I know he will be missed. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
