About us

Tonkin + Taylor is New Zealand’s leading environmental and engineering consultancy, with offices across Aotearoa and Australia, employing over 1,000 people. We’re proudly 100% employee owned and operated, and are known for our technical specialists and industry leading engineers, scientists, planners and project managers. We’ve built our business on solid enduring relationships with central and local government, major international donor agencies, commercial organisations, developers, contractors, individuals, and other consultants. Tonkin + Taylor has provided specialist environmental and engineering consulting services since 1959. Our specialist focus is in the fields of geotechnical, civil and water resources engineering, environmental science and resource management. How it all began... Tonkin + Taylor was established as a partnership in Auckland in 1959 by two engineers involved in the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The company grew steadily as a specialist geotechnical consultancy, developing water resources and specialist civil engineering skills in the 1970s and entering environmental consultancy in the early 1980s. We were involved in New Zealand’s engineering export efforts in the early 1970s and have been operating in Malaysia for over 40 years and the Philippines for approximately 25 years. In 2006 we entered the Australian market and now operate nationally, with offices in Victoria and Queensland. For more information please visit our website: www.tonkintaylor.co.nz

The evolution of infrastructure demands innovative thinking and collaborative effort. Kenneth Macdonald, Sector Director for Water at Tonkin + Taylor, recently joined an Infrastructure New Zealand delegation to the UK to explore ‘Place-Based Solutions’.     Senior leaders from across the public and private sectors in Aotearoa visited London, Manchester and Cardiff and heard from a range of organisations, including OfWat, Transport for London, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Welsh Water, and Manchester City Football Club.     Ken shares recurring themes that emerged:    – Strong leadership from senior political figures is crucial for initiating progress - but trusting experts with delivery is equally important.
 – Focus on multi-decade horizons over short political cycles. This requires willingness from both public and private sectors to invest with these time frames in mind.
 – It’s helpful to have a willingness at leadership level to accept some well-articulated risks – but the overall benefits should significantly outweigh these risks.
 – Genuine collaboration between central government, local government, technical services, advisory services and delivery partners is vital.
Turning our focus to Aotearoa, the challenge is to adapt these lessons to our unique settings, recognising the immense potential for progress.     A big thank you to Nick Leggett, Issy Pasley and Martina Moroney at Infrastructure New Zealand for their organisation efforts, and to our UK hosts for their openness and insights.

We are proud to announce we won the 2024 Circular Project award at last week's inaugural ENVIRO Awards in Brisbane! Hosted by Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia, the awards celebrated leaders in the field who are bringing circular economy principles to life and making lasting change for their communities. Our innovative development of a Circular Economy Roadmap and Planning Toolkit helps us proactively work with these topics. It also gives other water companies practical tips and guidance to implement circular economy principles in their own communities. This project couldn't have happened without immense community engagement across multiple industries, our project partners ThinkPlace and Tonkin + Taylor , and seed funding from Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action . Congratulations to the team driving this important project!

The Matariki cluster, Puanga star, and new moon, are signals for the Māori New Year. It’s a time for renewal, reconnection and gathering, remembrance, celebrating the present, and looking to the future. Traditionally, Matariki is a time for Māori people to acknowledge that they are halfway through winter and are in the equinox period, having navigated this time as a community. The storage houses can be opened as the rationing period ends allowing celebrations. Given te reo Māori was originally a verbal language and lessons were conveyed verbally, evenings were a natural time for wānanga (knowledge sharing and planning). The longer nights were used to usher in the plentiful seasons ahead. Kumeroa P., Pou Whanake - Technical Director Māori, told us about what Matariki means for him “I have been fortunate to have Matariki around me since my younger days, during the establishment of kura kaupapa and throughout the revitalisation of te reo Māori. Matariki was a kaupapa that some of my educators told. I am fortunate to have early memories of celebrating and commemorating during Matariki, those are the memories that stand out to me.” We continue this tradition of looking up to look forward today. With the establishment of the public holiday, we hope that Aotearoa will take the time to participate in celebrating the present, remembering the past and looking to the future
