The #BlackFoils have taken the big prize in the Big Apple this morning with a win at Mubadala Sail Grand Prix New York to claim their 5th event victory of Season 4. This means they further extend their lead in the overall standings and gives them momentum with just three weeks until the Season 4 final in San Francisco. “We're not just going to the final to be there, we want to go there to win it. This weekend was our last chance to compete in a final and we're going to carry that momentum to San Fran.” says Driver Peter Burling Strategist Olivia Mackay backs up Burling’s sentiment; “We've always talked about building momentum going into San Fran and this feels like a really positive tick for us in the right direction. We really feel like we're coming together strongly as a team.” The Season Grand Final race is a winner-takes-all shoot-out race featuring only the boats placed top three on the season leaderboard and five fleet races precede that Grand Final in San Francisco. The finale event runs across 13-14 July 2024 with a US $2 million winner-takes-all Grand Final set for 14 July. The New Zealand SailGP Team the Black Foils extended their overall lead in Season 4 despite finishing 5th at the ROCKWOOL Canada SailGP event. They ae now eleven points clear at the top of the leaderboard after event 11 of 13. Gusty winds and rain resulted in a hectic day on the water in Halifax which saw the F50s cracking top speeds of over 90kp/h, out-of-control manoeuvres, and the Australian team capsize. Great Britain won the event - their first since Giles Scott took over driving duties from Sir Ben Ainslie late last year - with France and Denmark filling out the rest of the podium. “Going into that last race we knew we needed a reasonable one to get into the final. We got a great start and were looking in good shape, and then just slipped backwards from there which was pretty frustrating.” says Black Foils driver Peter Burling.
