Who is Big Dom? Meet Dom DiSandro, Eagles’ chief security officer involved in 49ers scuffle

The world met Big Dom on Sunday.

Dom DiSandro, the Eagles’ chief security officer/senior advisor to the general manager, introduced himself to everyone outside of Philadelphia on Dec. 3, 2023 when he got into a physical scuffle with 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, leading to the ejection of both in San Francisco’s 42-19 win.

DiSandro and the Eagles could now be facing punishment from the NFL for his actions.

He interjected himself into a scuffle between Greenlaw and Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith, touching the 49ers linebacker while attempting to break up the skirmish, which led to Greenlaw hitting DiSandro in the face.

While DiSandro is well-known in the Philadelphia area and would have become a legend had his ejection galvanized the Eagles to a victory, most outside fan bases did not know much or anything about him before the tussle.

Here are some details about the Eagles’ security czar.

DiSandro serves as a senior advisor to Howie Roseman

No, that is not a mistake.

DiSandro is listed as both the head security officer and the senior advisor to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman on the Eagles’ website.

He “oversees all safety and security matters for players, coaches, and executives. He also directs security at the team’s training complex, is responsible for security measures related to team travel and logistics and provides education on the NFL’s personal conduct policy,” per the team’s profile.

He’s been an Eagles employee since 1999

DiSandro is in his 25th year with the organization, according to his team profile.

He first joined the organization as an entry-level scout for the Big East in 1997, but officially was hired in 1999, per the Philadelphia Inquirer.

That time in the organization has made him a valuable employee, and he reports directly to team owner Jeff Lurie.

“There may not be an employee whom owner Jeffrey Lurie entrusts with his franchise’s delicate matters more than the boxcar-built chief security officer,” the paper wrote about DiSandro.

Big Dom was loved by Andy Reid

Former Eagles coach Andy Reid, who joined the organization the same year DiSandro was officially hired, speaks quite highly of DiSandro.

“Big Dom is the man,” Reid said on “Green Light with Chris Long” in August. “He’s like a son. Special guy. That’s my Italian son.”

Philadelphia roots

DiSandro, who turned 44 in January, was born in south Philadelphia, and attended George Washington High School in the city, per the Inquirer.

He earned a scholarship to Penn State but never played for the Nittany Lions.
