More on Pennsylvania Sports Betting

Pennsylvania Sports Betting

Few states compare with Pennsylvania’s population in terms of their passion for sports, and this is reflected in the Keystone State widely embracing legal sports betting.

One of the earliest movers across the US, Pennsylvania legalized sports betting in 2017, with retail sportsbooks opening in November 2018, followed by the online launch in May 2019. One of the stipulations of PA law is that each online sportsbook must partner with a land-based casino.

In 2022, Pennsylvania residents aged 21 or above have one of the widest choices of sportsbooks available in the US. The list of licensed sports betting apps grew to 14 when PointsBet was approved for business in February 2022, joining many big names such as BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook, and DraftKings.

Betr Sportsbook recently gained market access in Pennsylvania, so stay tuned for details on this platform in the Keystone State.

Latest Pennsylvania Sports Betting News

PointsBets became the 14th licensed sportsbook operator in Pennsylvania as it struck a partnership with casino operators Penn National Gaming.

As PointsBet got in just ahead of Super Bowl 56 that ensured Keystone State bettors had among the largest choice of big-game bonuses and promos nationwide.

This was reflected in the enormous figures reported by the PGCB afterward. Over $68 million was bet on the Super Bowl in Pennsylvania, a 27% increase from the year previous.

Since PA sports betting apps launched in the summer of 2019, about 90% of all bets have been placed online and it was an identical number for Super Bowl 56 bets.

PointsBet’s online casino is now live in PA as of April, with this joining their sportsbook product that has been live in the Keystone state since February.

In other news, Betr Sportsbook recently gained access to the Pennsylvania sports betting market and may launch in the state soon.

The History of Pennsylvania Sports Betting

Motions to legalize sports betting in Pennsylvania gained traction as far back as 2015. After plenty of deliberating within the state legislature, sports betting officially became legal in 2017 as part of a wider gambling expansion bill.

However, progress slowed in the following year. The first retail sportsbooks opened in November 2018, while the online rollout didn’t happen until the following May.

In comparison to neighboring New Jersey, PA took longer to launch online betting. Nevertheless, Pennsylvania has quickly developed into one of the top markets for legal sports betting in the US.

Pennsylvania Sports Teams to Bet On

The Eagles find the end zone.
The Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018.

Pennsylvania’s sporting muscle is as famous as the steel produced in Pittsburgh. Between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh’s roster of professional NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB teams the state boasts 26 national championships. That’s before you even get on to the collegiate prowess of the likes of Villanova, Penn State, and Temple’s teams.

Philadelphia 76ers

After legendary coach Larry Brown came close to adding a fourth NBA Championship to the franchise’s collection in 2000/01, it’s been slimmer pickings for Sixers fans since. What the Philadelphia outfit would give to draft players of Wilt Chamberlain’s or Moses Malone’s class back on their roster.

Both men inspired the Sixers to different NBA Championship wins in 1966/67 and 1982/83 respectively. It’s not been all doom and gloom in recent years, though, with the emergence of another Sixers star in the form of Joel Embiid.

The third pick of the 2014 NBA draft has gone on to great individual success as a five-time NBA All-Star. During the 2021/22 season, the Cameroonian became the first Sixers player to score a 40-point triple-double since Chamberlain in 1968.

Having signed a four-year contract extension in the summer of 21 and under new coach Doc Rivers, the good times could yet be heading back to the Wells Fargo Center.

Philadelphia Eagles

The 2017 Super Bowl win was not only the Eagles’ first taste of ultimate football glory since the NFL merger in the 70s, but it also equaled revenge on the New England Patriots.

The Pats had narrowly beaten the Eagles to the Vincent Lombardi trophy in 2004, so that 41-33 victory carried extra sweetness for Philadelphians.

Quarterback Nick Foles was red-hot that day under the expert coaching of Doug Pederson and he deservedly picked up the Super Bowl MVP award.

Although the Eagles have played post-season football in three of four campaigns since, early in his tenure as head coach, Nick Sirianni is still building things back up.

Philadelphia Flyers

Flyers fans will rightly feel like their team should have amassed more Stanley Cup wins than the back-to-back titles claimed in the mid-70s.

Unfortunately, some excellent teams and players down the years have come unstuck in a further five Stanley Cup finals appearances.

The Flyers’ most recent date with destiny came against the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009/10. Having given themselves a mountain to climb with a 0-2 score after game two, Peter Laviolette’s men managed to swing the momentum as they came back to 2-2.

It wasn’t to be. The Flyers came up short against a star-studded Blackhawks roster, but not many had given them a chance of winning the conference even, so it was a huge credit to the Wachovia Center residents to go to game six.

Philadelphia Phillies

If you drew a graph of the number of seasons versus the number of World Series wins, it would make slightly sore reading for even the most devoted Phillies fans.

However, a long history is always a proud history and that’s the case with the long list of Pennsylvania’s pro teams. Established in 1890, the Philadelphia Phillies have always been a major league outfit and they do have a pair of World Championships to put in the trophy cabinet.

The great news for the current crop of Fightin’ Phillies fans is that their most golden era is still fresh in the memory. Under the astute management of Charlie Manuel, the MLB franchise nearly claimed back-to-back World Series.

With Cole Hamels on the mound, the Phillies crowned the 2008 campaign with their first world crown since 1980. Hamels was named World Series MVP, but Manuel’s men came up just shy in the final round of the playoffs against the New York Yankees a year later.

In the shape of the 2021 National League’s MVP Bruce Harper, Phillies fans are daring to dream again.

Philadelphia Union

Founded in 2008, the Union certainly can’t compete in the Keystone State’s history tables of pro sports teams.

Nevertheless, the Subaru Park residents created their own history in 2020. While the world was still reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic, Philadelphia’s first MLS franchise claimed their first title.

Having finished top of the regular season’s overall standings, Jim Curtin’s men bagged themselves the franchise’s first major honors in the shape of the Supporters’ Shield.

His team’s stellar performances over the season earned Curtin his first Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year Award. Although the 2021 season was a little underwhelming, given the prior success, heading into the 2022 campaign, there is still cause for optimism at Subaru Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Steel City’s oldest pro sports franchise can boast that it took part in the inaugural World Series in 1903, having been founded in 1882 (as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys).

OK, so they might have come out second best on that famous occasion, but the Pirates came back stronger in 1909 to see off a stubborn Detroit Tigers team 4-3.

Another four World Series triumphs were added to the collection over the next 70 seasons, wherein the last of those was brought back to the then Three Rivers Stadium.

Despite piecing together another formidable team under Clint Hurdle heading into the 2013 campaign, the Pirates came unstuck in the National League Divisional Series at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Keystone State’s historic NHL bragging rights are certainly with the Penguins for their five Stanley Cups compared to the Flyers’ pair.

Unlike many other pro sports teams, the Penguins have rather impressively taken advantage of the eras in which they’ve assembled great sides.

This is reflected in stringing together back-to-back championships, not once, but twice in their history.  The first of these Stanley Cup “doubles” arrived between 1990 and 1992 and they also repeated this sizeable achievement as recently as 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Sandwiched in between these was an epic 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings when the Penguins marched to a third Stanley Cup victory.

The Eastern Conference side’s puck prowess is also reflected in their current run of 15 consecutive playoff appearances.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Sitting proudly on top of Pennsylvania’s pro sports pile in terms of national championships gained, are the Steelers.

The famous NFL franchise has picked up the Vince Lombardi Trophy six times, producing two era-defining teams. The first of those was the 1970s collection of future Hall-of-Famers anchored by the passing proficiency of Terry Bradshaw at quarterback.

Bradshaw would go on to win four Super Bowls between 1974 and 1979, famously making it a clean sweep of the NFL’s top individual accolades following a momentous 35-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

It wasn’t all about offense either, with Jack Lambert still regarded by many as one of the game’s greatest linebackers.

Almost exactly 30 years on from this near 70s domination of the NFL, the Steelers produced another brilliant team that claimed the 2005 and 2008 championships, before narrowly missing out to the Green Bay Packers in 2010.

With Mike Tomlin as head coach since 2007, the Steelers have been a model of consistency in the proceeding seasons, regularly appearing in the playoffs – coming within one game of the big one yet again in 2016.
