How do you properly clean a coffee machine?
“To keep coffee tasting fresh, coffee equipment should be rinsed on a daily basis. Clean everything that comes in contact with liquid or ground coffee with hot soapy water once a month or so,” Giuliano said. “Carafes and filter baskets can be rinsed in the sink, and a quick wipe of the machine (not forgetting the area above the filter basket!) will keep everything clean and fresh. On a monthly basis, a good soak of equipment in hot soapy water will prevent oil buildup.”
If you’re using an automatic drip machine, then Giuliano advises you descale once a month to avoid mineral buildup from affecting the internal operations of the machine. “A descaling product (usually a tablet or a powder) is put in the machine, just like normal brewing. An alternative is a mixture of 50-50 white vinegar and water. After running the descaling solution through, do a couple of rinse cycles using plain water and this will make it spic and span,” he said.
What should you look for in a descaling solution?
“Descaling products are usually made with citric acid, which is a food-safe and very effective way to remove limescale from the interior of the machine,” Giuliano said. “These are convenient and very safe. Normal dish soap can be used, but should be rinsed thoroughly. Vinegar can also be used, but it’s a little more aromatic.”
That said, it’s best to avoid strong smelling or harsh cleaners that use bleach or scouring agents.
