Luxury home with private terrace above MoMA lists for $14.88M

This sprawling unit in the 82-story tower soaring above New York’s Museum of Modern Art is seeking a buyer.

Located within 53 West 53 at 53 W. 53rd St. — the spiked, supertall condo building that was completed adjacent to MoMA in 2020 — residence 17B offers over 4,200 square feet of starchitect-designed indoor space, plus an 800-square-foot private terrace, according to Robb Report

The listing, which is held by a Douglas Elliman team including Frances Katzen and Fredrik Eklund, is seeking $14.88 million.

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom abode comes pre-furnished by interior design firm ASH — highlights of which include a pair of vintage 1970s chrome and leather Italian chairs, and a sculptural lamp by Jaime Hayón for &Tradition.

The home opens to a formal entry foyer with a gallery leading to the floor to ceiling window-lined great room. From here, pocket doors offer access to the windowed breakfast room and adjoining custom kitchen by the late French architect Thierry Despont, where marble countertops and a black-lit marble backsplash are paired with glass cabinetry and Dornbracht fixtures. Also accessible from the great room is the terrace.

The 470-square-foot primary bedroom, which also has terrace access, features a walk-in closet, an ensuite bathroom with custom carved vanities, a cast iron soaking tub and radiant-heated floors.

Throughout there are “museum-quality finishes” built to pair with the building’s Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel’s design — as well as lofty ceilings, motorized Lutron solar shades and “humidified and filtered fresh air” throughout the apartment, according to the listing. 

In addition to the property’s private amenities, the building also boasts a 24-hour concierge, porter service and access to bicycle storage, a wine-tasting room, a library, a fitness center, housekeeping, floral delivery, technology assistance, pet walking and grooming, in many cases for an additional cost. 

As well, 53 West 53 recently unveiled a residents’ lounge with private dining room called Club 53, according to Robb Report.
