So far, so good for Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
There were plenty of concerns about whether Djokovic would be able to win a match, let alone contend for the title, after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in early June, but the 37-year-old Serb has shown few ill effects from the procedure through three matches.
Djokovic has dropped just two sets so far and is one win away from a trip to the quarterfinals.
That said, he’ll face his first stiff test of the tournament against Holger Rune in the Round of 16 on Monday.
Rune had a terrific 2023 season, but he fell off the boil in the beginning of 2024 and some off-court drama added to the disappointment.
The 21-year-old seemed to right the ship a bit with a decent showing at Roland Garros and two easy wins to start Wimbledon, but his third-round victory was emblematic of his performance this year.
He dropped the first two sets to World No. 220 Quentin Halys before putting his game together and advancing to the fourth round.
It’s fair to expect more of the same from Rune in this matchup.
He’ll fancy his chances against a banged-up Djokovic, and there will be times where he is the dominant player, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion will know, if he weathers the storm, that Rune will make mistakes.
