Mets call up Jose Butto in bid to help struggling bullpen

The Mets are hoping Jose Butto can help fix their beleaguered bullpen.

The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday ahead of the team’s game against the Nationals, with lefty Tyler Jay optioned to Syracuse.

The Mets’ recent surge has been hampered by a number of bullpen blowups, most recently during Monday’s 10-inning win in Washington.

After the Mets scored six runs in the top of the 10th to take a 9-3 lead, Jay gave up four runs (three earned) while recording two outs before Reed Garrett earned his fourth save of the season.

Garrett was one of the culprits in Saturday’s loss to the Astros as the Mets coughed up a 6-1 lead, unable to record an out in the eighth inning while giving up a run on a hit, two walks and a wild pitch.

Butto, 26, has only been a starter this year but will now be a multi-inning bullpen option in the majors.

He made seven big-league starts this year, pitching to a 3.08 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 38 innings.

The right-hander has a 3.25 ERA with Triple-A Syracuse in eight starts this season.
