Anything is possible in the Upside Down.
Joseph Quinn teased that he might reprise his role as Eddie Munson in the final season of “Stranger Things,” despite the character’s tragic demise.
“I might have that feeling too,” the actor, 30, told Entertainment Tonight of a potential comeback at the June 26 New York premiere of “A Quiet Place: Day One.”
“Or maybe I don’t. Who knows? Maybe I do…” Quinn added.
Regardless of Eddie’s fate, Quinn expressed his desire to revisit the “Stranger Things” set for Season 5.
“I love those guys. I’d love to come and say hello,” the actor told ET. “I’m sure they’re working very hard to land the plane. It’s a long time they’ve been working on that so I’m really delighted they’re getting toward the end and they’re having a nice time. I’m sure they’re gonna deliver it in a pretty epic finale.”
Quinn has been busy since appearing on the Netflix series in Season 4. He stars alongside Lupita Nyong’o in “A Quiet Place: Day One” and is slated to play Jonathan “Johnny” Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, in 2025’s “Fantastic Four.”
Quinn’s Hellfire Club leader Eddie sacrificed himself to help Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) fend off Vecna’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) demobats. He suffered serious injuries as he died in his best bud Dustin’s arms.
To get out alive, Dustin had to leave his friend’s body in the Upside Down.
Eddie’s journey resonated with audiences, evolving from a troubled past to heroic sacrifice in one season.
Following Season 4’s 2022 release, Quinn said that Eddie’s death was the perfect example of how brave the character became.
“It’s a redemption tale,” he told the Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I think he gets a little bored with feeling pathetic and unable to do anything. And then at some point in Episode 8, a switch flips, and he decides that he’s going to prove himself. The opportunity then arises, but he has to pay the ultimate price. But he proves to himself that he certainly isn’t a coward.”
Quinn’s recent cryptic comments have fueled speculation about the character’s fate. After all, the Duffer brothers are known for their unexpected twists.
In Season 1, 12-year-old Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) managed to make it out of the terrifying alternate dimension alive after being rescued by his mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and local chief of police Jim Hopper (David Harbour).
In an interview with TV Insider after Season 4, Matarazzo revealed how he thinks Eddie’s death will affect Dustin moving into the final season. Matarazzo said that while he doesn’t know what the Duffer brothers have in store, he would imagine that Dustin will be permanently changed after the tragedy.
“There’s going to need to be a bit of focus on the fact that nobody can really come back from seeing that,” Matarazzo said.
Quinn called the relationship between Dustin and Eddie “a fraternal kind of connection,” to THR.
Matarazzo said that Dustin likely lacks any sort of closure from the event and “if they’re going to play with that, it’s something I’ll be thinking about quite a lot.”
Season 5 of “Stranger Things” is filming and expected to debut in 2025. Production was initially supposed to begin in May 2023, but the Hollywood strikes led to delays.
Quinn’s former co-star Maya Hawke told ET that it’s “heartbreaking” that the show is coming to an end.
“It’s the end of a really long journey,” Hawke, 25, said. “Longer for some of my castmates, even, than for me. So it’s really sentimental. But as a late addition cast member, I feel like it’s my job to be here to facilitate their feelings and just be grateful and excited to have been a part of it at all.”
Millie Bobby Brown, meanwhile, is ready to move on from her Eleven role.
“I’m definitely ready to wrap up. I feel like there’s a lot of the story that’s been told now,” the actress, 20, told Seventeen magazine in March 2023. “It’s been in our lives for a very long time. But I’m very ready to say goodbye to this chapter of my life, and open new ones up.”
There will be a three-year gap between Seasons 4 and 5, which is the same amount of time there was between Seasons 3 and 4. Season 4 experienced a six-month delay due to COVID-19.
“Stranger Things” also stars Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton.
