‘The Show’ Episode 107: David Cone Previews The Subway Series

The Subway Series will have some juice this season.

It didn’t look that way a few weeks ago, but with the Mets turning their season around, the two-game set in Queens has some life.

The Mets are 1.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot; the Yankees have a two game lead in the AL East.

The Mets are the hottest team in MLB in the month of June while the Yankees have lost their last three series.

It kicks off Tuesday night as Gerrit Cole takes the hill for the Yanks.

Speaking of ace pitchers in New York, David Cone used to be one for both the Yankees and Mets. The ESPN and YES Network analyst won four titles with the Yankees from 1996-2000.

Cone joined Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman this week on “The Show” podcast to talk everything Subway Series, pitching, sticky stuff and his NY memories.

“The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman & Jon Heyman:

  • SUBWAY SERIES PREVIEW: Mets have a deep lineup. Their issue is not their offense. They need some pitching help in the bullpen. Mets should go for a closer-like reliever. Yankees need Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu to wake up.

David Cone Interview:
ESPN/YES MLB analyst, Mets and Yankees great

  • METS/YANKEES NEEDS: Both teams could use a bit of bullpen help. A lot for Yanks could depend on Ben Rice and if he pans out to see if they need a bat.
  • GLEYBER TORRES: He is not having a good season. What’s going on with him?
  • EDWIN DIAZ/STICKY STUFF: Sticky stuff enhances four-seam fastballs and spin rates on breaking balls. Reliever suspended for 10 games is a big deal. Punishment doesn’t fit the crime.
  • PITCHING CHANGES: Strike zone has changed a lot. There are better pitchers now. Pitching is better than it has ever been.
  • HALL OF FAME: Should you be in?
  • METS/YANKEES ALLEGIANCE: Fell in love with New York playing for the Mets. Had never been to NY before getting traded there. Championships matter and going down the Canyon of Heroes four times with the Yankees was a life-changing experience. Always a soft spot for the Mets.
  • METS: That lineup is scary if they’re all doing what they’re supposed to do.
