Gable Steveson’s surprise Bills signing comes with WWE diss

A foe from Gable Steveson’s professional wrestling past has thrown shade at the former Olympic gold medalist after he signed in the NFL.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday that the Bills have signed Steveson, who was recently released from his contract with WWE, to play on the defensive line.

Trevor Lee, who performed in WWE’s developmental promotion NXT as Cameron Grimes and was also recently released by the company, came in off the top rope to throw mud on Steveson’s work ethic.

After Ringer wrestling podcaster Kazeem Famuyide asked what position Steveson would be playing — it wasn’t immediately clear from Schefter’s original tweet — Lee responded, “Whichever one requires the least amount work and has other people make him look good I’m assuming? Wait wrong sport….”

Lee and Steveson wrestled in an untelevised match in January, and there was a moment in which Steveson did a celebratory taunt on Lee that made no sense in the story of the bout.

Lee was baffled by that decision, and threw his arms up in a combination of disdain and confusion.

Steveson ultimately won the match in a squash.

Steveson, who won the Olympic gold medal in the 12 kg weight class in freestyle wrestling in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had never played organized football before signing with the Bills.

“I have been fortunate to compete at the highest level of competition in my sport but am looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills may translate to football,” he told ESPN. “I am grateful to Coach [Sean] McDermott, [GM] Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me this opportunity.”
