Heart-stopping video shows hero NYPD cops rush to evacuate babies, man on crutches as buildings burn

Heart-stopping NYPD bodycam footage shows hero cops carrying babies and helping a man on crutches in mad rushes to evacuate burning buildings in two separate incidents last week.

The footage, released Tuesday, shows officers jumping into action Wednesday morning to evacuate “numerous” residents from the NYCHA’s 22-story Langston Hughes apartments in Brownsville, Brooklyn after they saw smoke billowing from the fourth floors, officials said.

“We heard screaming for help, calls for help out the window,” one of the cops, Mark Kalwa, told WNBC.

“When you hear the screams, it’s something in you,” Kalwa said. “You can’t just disregard that and wait for fire, so we went up.”

The clip, posted on X by NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry, shows the cops carrying out at least two babies in diapers and guiding a man walking with crutches to safety.

“The first person who came was a mother with a child and she just looked like she was going to go down, so I grabbed the baby from her, helped her down the stairs and took the baby,” Kalwa’s partner, Officer Vincenzo Rallo, told WNBC. “And that was the first one we brought down.

“It was the most gratifying thing — the kid being safe was just the coolest feeling,” he added.

A third cop could be seen carrying a teen with a broken leg down the stairs.

A dozen civilians were evaluated at the scene, according to the FDNY.

Two women, 61 and 29, were hospitalized in stable condition for smoke inhalation, the NYPD said. The older woman also suffered burns.

NYPD cops jumped into action once again when a fire erupted around 11 p.m. Saturday inside a three-story building on 93rd Street near Roosevelt Avenue in North Corona, authorities said.

A second clip also posted by Daughtry shows officers yell, “Go, go, go! Get out!” as they sprint up the stairs and direct all of the tenants to leave the building. One of them was a baby, according to cops and the body cam footage.

“First on scene for a residential fire call, they began to methodically clear the floors, evacuating residents to safety — including a 3 month old infant!” the police official wrote.

Three people were hospitalized, including two police officers who suffered smoke inhalation and were listed in stable condition.

The cause of that fire also had not been determined by Tuesday.
