The Nets promoted assistant Kevin Ollie to interim head coach on Monday, hours after firing Jacque Vaughn.
Here is a look at some candidates that could land the future gig, including Ollie:
Mike Budenholzer
In the Tom Thibodeau mold, an experienced coach with a history of success. In 10 seasons as the Hawks’ and Bucks’ coach, he won a title in 2021 and reached the postseason nine times, accumulating a .604 winning percentage (801-484).
Mark Jackson
The Brooklyn native wants to get back into coaching, but hasn’t been able to break through. He interviewed with the Bucks last spring. Jackson, the 58-year-old former St. John’s star, coached the Warriors from 2011-14, and has worked in television ever since.
JJ Redick
A 15-year NBA veteran now working for ESPN, Redick would be an outside-the-box hire as someone who has never coached before. Teams, however, have approached the one-time sharpshooter about a job as an assistant before, and he interviewed for the Raptors’ job last May. He could wind up taking the Steve Kerr route, going from the broadcast booth to being a head coach. That’s worked out pretty well for the Warriors.
Nate McMillan
He has extensive head-coaching experience in the NBA, 19 seasons of it with the SuperSonics, Trail Blazers, Pacers and Hawks, but McMillan, 59, didn’t even last three full seasons in Atlanta, fired 59 games into last year.
Kevin Ollie
He’s light on coaching experience in the NBA, having joined the Nets just this year. But he has won big before, leading Connecticut to the national championship in 2014. Ollie will have a chance the rest of the year to make a strong impression as the Nets’ interim head coach.
