In what was supposed to be a day of jubilation, the Chiefs were left devastated by the fatal shooting that happened at the end of the Super Bowl 2024 victory parade.
After the shooting that has left one dead and 22 with gunshot wounds, the organization released a statement, saying it was “saddened” by the tragedy that unfolded near Union Station on Wednesday afternoon in Kanas City.
The Kanas City Police Department said at a press conference that it took three armed people into custody following the shooting.
According to NFL Network’s Jesse Palmer, Children’s Mercy hospital in Kansas City is now treating 12 patients, 11 of which are children.
Nine of those patients have gunshot wounds.
“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” the team wrote in the statement. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.”
The Chiefs said in their statement that “all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.”
A number of players on the team, including Patrick Mahomes, have released their own statements following the chaos of the day.
“Praying for Kansas City…” Mahomes wrote on X with three praying hands emoji.
Linebacker Drue Tranquill thanked those who helped the victims.
“Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act,” he wrote.
“Pray that doctors & first responders would have steady hands & that all would experience full healing.”
