A new era in Washington could spark Eric Bieniemy’s return to Kansas City.
Eric Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Commanders this past season but is out of a job after head coach Ron Rivera’s firing and a new regime has stepped in.
The Commanders hired Dan Quinn as their head coach and Kliff Kingsbury as the team’s offensive coordinator, leaving Bieniemy without a job at the moment.
NBC Sports is reporting that Bieniemy could potentially return to Kansas City, where he was the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 until last offseason when he joined the Commanders.
Bieniemy’s title could be something along the lines of assistant head coach, allowing Matt Nagy to likely remain offensive coordinator, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported.
As the team struggled offensively during the season, Mahomes cited the lack of Bieniemy’s presence as a reason.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s a combination of a lot of guys,” Mahomes said in December. “I think coach Bieniemy set that standard when he was here and I think you could see those lingering effects of the other coaches who have coached underneath EB [Eric Bieniemy] and then coach Nagy.”
Prior to his stint as an offensive coordinator, he was the team’s running backs coach from 2013-17.
Bieniemy won two Super Bowl championships with the Chiefs in his offensive coordinator role.
