Wife of Canadian PM in relationship with surgeon months before announcing separation, bombshell court docs reveal

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife “re-partnered” with an Ottawa pediatric surgeon months before the country’s first couple announced they were separating.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau — who shockingly revealed in August that she was splitting up with the leader after 18 years of marriage — struck up a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, months before, according to Canada’s National Post.

His ex-wife, Ana Remonda, claimed in divorce papers filed on April 26 that Bettolli had “re-partnered with a high profile individual who attracts significant media attention and presents significant security considerations,” according to the outlet— which named the unidentified “high profile individual” as Grégoire Trudeau.

Remonda, a stay-at-home mother, wrote in the court documents that she has “no position” on her former husband’s new dalliance.

But she insisted the new relationship resulted in unspecified security concerns “to which the children are exposed while in their father’s care” and requested a court order to secure their two children’s privacy and protection, the National Post reports.

In response, Bettolli reportedly insisted that his ex-wife’s attitude towards his new relationship is “not in the children’s best interest,” and claimed that Remonda threatened to return to their home country of Argentina if his new relationship became public.

The couple’s divorce was finalized in January 2020, and the allegations outlined in the court documents have not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the prime minister’s office confirmed in August that he and his wife had already signed a legal agreement.

The couple did not give a reason for their sudden split at the time.
It has now come to light that Grégoire had started a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, months before.

“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” a spokesman for the Prime Minister said in a statement at the time.

“They remain a close family and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment.”

Following their separation, Grégoire Trudeau moved out of the prime minister’s estate and is staying at another home in Ottawa, while her kids live in the official residence.

The location of her new home is undisclosed, but the first lady has posted Instagram videos on mental health care and gender equality that appear to have been recorded not far from Rideau Hall, the official residence of the prime minister.

Unmarked vehicles with what appear to be plainclothes Royal Canadian Mounted Police members inside have also been seen in recent weeks inside the building — which is listed as Bettolli’s address, according to the National Post.

He works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, specializing in minimally invasive surgeries and chest wall deformities in children, and teaches at the University of Ottawa medical school.

Bettolli went to medical school at the Catholic University of Cordoba in his native Argentina, according to his bio on the University of Ottawa website.

He then moved to Canada in 2004, before becoming the educational leader for the pediatric surgery undergraduate program at the university in 2010.

The Post has reached out to Bettolli, Grégoire Trudeau and the prime minister’s Office for comment.
