Ben McAdoo joins Patriots coaching staff in latest comeback chance

Apparently the Patriots are where failed Giants coaches go to attempt to revive their careers.

New England is hiring former Giants coach Ben McAdoo as an offensive assistant coach on Jerod Mayo’s staff, according to NFL Network.

McAdoo, who lasted less than two seasons as the Giants head coach, has a relationship with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt from their time in Green Bay, according to Sports Illustrated.

Once considered one of the bright offensive minds in the sport, McAdoo has struggled to hold jobs ever since the Giants fired him after 12 games in the 2017 season.

McAdoo returned to coaching in the 2020 season, serving as the Jaguars’ quarterback coach, and then worked as a consultant for the Cowboys the following season.

The Panthers hired McAdoo as their offensive coordinator for the 2022 season, but that lasted just one season with Matt Rhule being let go after a 1-4 start.

After not being hired for the 2023 season, McAdoo will now have his chance to leave his mark on a Patriots team in transition.

The Patriots previously brought back former Giants head coach Joe Judge after he flamed out in New York.

New England had one of the worst offensive units in the sport last year, but is headed for a massive change since the Patriots are in position to grab a quarterback with the third pick after Mac Jones regressed so much that the was benched down the stretch.

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are the three quarterbacks atop most team’s draft boards with the potential of them going one, two, three to start the 2024 draft.

McAdoo coached the Giants to the playoffs during the 2016 season before it all fell apart the following season when the Giants fired him amid a 2-10 start and the brutal handling of the decision to bench Eli Manning.

The 46-year-old also has worked with the Saints and 49ers during his career.
