Orioles acquire Corbin Burnes in blockbuster trade with Brewers

Corbin Burnes is headed to the Orioles in a blockbuster trade with the Brewers, Baltimore announced Thursday night.

In exchange, the Brewers will get shortstop Joey Ortiz, left-handed pitcher D.L. Hall, and a competitive balance round A draft pick.

Burnes will be heading to only his second team after spending six years in Milwaukee after he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Saint Mary’s College of California.

In his last three seasons, the right-hander has hit his stride, earning three All-Star nods and winning the National League Cy Young award in 2021 after holding a 2.43 ERA across 28 game starts.

He has a 3.26 career ERA with 870 strikeouts in 709 1/3 innings.

Burnes will be among a relatively young starting pitching corps that features star Kyle Bradish.

The right-hander had a strong second year in Baltimore with a 2.83 ERA in 30 starts, placing fourth in the race for the AL Cy Young Award, which went to the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole.

Last season, the team had great success after winning 101 games and making an appearance in the AL Division Series.

Burnes, 29, will also be joining a refreshed Orioles franchise that has a new ownership group headed by Baltimore native David Rubenstein.

The Angelos family, who ran the team for three decades, sold a controlling stake in the team to Rubenstein for $1.725 billion this week.

Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. and Grant Hill are both a part of the investor group — that also includes former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — that has agreed to purchase the club.

Now, they await MLB approval for the sale.

“I am excited to once again be a part of the Orioles organization and I thank David for including me in the ownership group,” Ripken said in a statement. “The Orioles have been a part of my life since I was a child, and this is a special day.”
