Byrne Dairy recalls ice cream over undeclared peanuts after NYC dancer’s death sparked allergy panic

An upstate New York dairy company has recalled half-gallon cartons of chocolate ice cream because it may contain undeclared peanuts — just weeks after a mislabeled cookie caused the death of a professional dancer in the Big Apple.

“Byrne Dairy, Inc…is voluntarily recalling its Byrne Dairy Might Finer Chocolate Ice Cream in half gallon cartons [dated] 10/4/2024 because it may contain undeclared peanuts,” the Tuesday announcement read.

“People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product,” the press release explained.

The recall was the result of a consumer complaint, the company noted — adding that no illnesses from the product have been reported.

The recall comes less than one month after professional dancer Órla Baxendale, 25, died from a severe allergic reaction to an incorrectly labeled Vanilla Florentine cookie from grocery store Stew Leonard’s.

Baxendale, who was originally from the UK, was at a rehearsal in Connecticut when she ate the cookie, which contained peanut ingredients that were not disclosed on the packaging.

Her reaction was so intense that even her Epi Pen was ineffective, her loved ones’ attorney said in a statement last week.

Byrne Dairy is based in Syracuse, according to the company website.

The brand — which makes extended shelf life creams and half-and-half in addition to ice cream — boasts “pure and simple” products from local family farms.
