Jim Harbaugh interviews with Falcons as NFL rumors continue to heat up

The Falcons are doing their due diligence in their head coaching search, and that’s led them to interview some high-profile names.

After giving Bill Belichick an interview on Monday for its open position, Atlanta did the same for Jim Harbaugh on Tuesday, the team announced.

Harbaugh, 60, is coming off an interview with the Chargers for their vacant head coaching position.

At the helm of Michigan this year, he led an undefeated season that the Wolverines culminated in a College Football Playoff national title.

That momentous win did not come without scandal, however, as Harbaugh was suspended for the final three regular season games by the Big Ten as the program was embroiled in a sign-stealing imbroglio.

Former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions, the alleged ringleader of the plot, resigned in November.

In nine seasons in Ann Arbor, Harbaugh has an 89-25 record.

He previously coached the 49ers, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance and two other NFC title game runs.

He has not delved too much into the rumors about a potential return to the NFL.

“I just want to enjoy this. I hope you give me that. Can a guy have that?” Harbaugh said after the national championship game. “Does it always have to be, ‘What’s next, what’s the future?’”

After firing Arthur Smith, the Falcons have now conducted interviews with seven candidates, which include Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan and Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

It was another disappointing year for Atlanta, which finished 7-10 for the third straight season.

The Falcons have not made the playoffs since the 2018 season.
