Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold revealed that she has weathered well over 64 death threats since a lawsuit was filed to jettison Trump from the state ballot.
Griswold, a Democrat, stressed that she would not bend the knee to public pressure on the matter.
“Within three weeks of the lawsuit being filed, I received 64 death threats. I stopped counting after that. I will not be intimidated. Democracy and peace will triumph over tyranny and violence,” Griswold wrote on X.
In her post, she linked to an interview she did where she noted that she was “extremely concerned” about violence and threats over the suit.
Griswold also noted that she “did not file this case” but has been thrown into it because of her perch as Secretary of State.
Trump was set to be bumped from the state ballot following a Colorado Supreme Court ruling earlier this month but has since been temporarily kept on pending an appeal by his legal team to the US Supreme Court.
Colorado’s Republican primary contest is slated to take place on March 5, 2024, also known as Super Tuesday.
The Colorado Supreme Court’s 4-3 ruling pointed to Section 3 of the Civil War-era Fourteenth Amendment, commonly known as the Insurrection Clause or Disqualification Clause, which bars those who partook in an “insurrection or rebellion” from holding office.
Ultimately, they concluded Trump’s machinations to challenge the 2020 election prohibit him from running under the Disqualification Clause.
Trump’s team has eviscerated the ruling.
“We have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these unAmerican lawsuits,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said at the time.
In the time since, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows opted to discharge him from the 2024 state primary ballot on similar grounds.
Griswold commended Bellows after she unilaterally gave Trump the boot.
“I do think Secretary Bellows is brave and courageous,” Griswold told MSNBC on Friday. “She is the first individual, by herself, having to make this decision.”
Bellows has claimed to have weathered death threats as well and recently said she was “swatted” — had a false call made to the police to draw officers to her house.
Other states such as California and Michigan have declined to go so far as to eject Trump from the ballot — for now.
