Bill Belichick asked if he wants public Patriots support like Jets brass got

There was little chance Bill Belichick was going to provide a real answer, but that didn’t prevent him from being asked anyway.

Making his weekly appearance on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI in Boston on Tuesday, Belichick was asked if he’d like Patriots owner Robert Kraft to take a page out of Jets owner Woody Johnson’s playbook and publicly endorse him as the team’s head coach next year.

Rumors have swirled around Belichick’s Patriots future all season as the team owns a 4-11 record.

Johnson told The Post’s Brian Costello on Sunday that Jets head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas are both returning in their respective roles next year prior to the team’s win over the Commanders on Sunday.

“I don’t really know anything about the Jets situation,” Belichick answered in his trademark say-nothing tone. “I don’t know anything about that, so [going] to get ready for Buffalo here. Go back over the Denver game, make some corrections on that and talk about things we could have done better, things we need to build on, and then move on to Buffalo. That’s what I’m doing.”

Belichick was then asked again, without the need to comment on the Jets’ situation, if he’d like public support from Kraft.

“Yeah, my job is to get the team ready to play every week that’s what I do,” Belichick responded. “That’s what I’m going to keep doing. That’s what I’ve always done.”

The Patriots will miss the playoffs this year for the third time in four seasons, and have had little success since Tom Brady left.

Kraft plans to move on from Belichick after the season, according to NBC Sports Boston, which added that the legendary coach’s fate was sealed after the Patriots’ 6-0 loss to the Colts in Germany on Nov. 12.

Belichick is unlikely to work with the Patriots and Kraft to facilitate a trade to another team or work toward an “elegant” solution, according to the Boston Sports Journal, making for a possible awkward — or bitter — end to his iconic tenure with the team.
