U.S. women’s national team and Gotham FC midfielder Kristie Mewis is set to make the jump across the pond and join West Ham.
The Athletic reported the news on Wednesday as Mewis will become the Hammers’ first signing of the January transfer window when it becomes official later this week.
Mewis had played the past two seasons for Gotham FC, including during the team’s 2023 championship run.
She had the assist on Katie Stengel’s goal in the 107th minute against Portland to send Gotham to the NWSL championship game.
In all, Mewis made 14 appearances for Gotham during the 2023 season, but her time was limited for them this past season because of USWNT commitments and injury.
She made her first World Cup appearance last summer when she came off the bench against Sweden in the last-16.
Mewis is set to join a West Ham squad that is second from the bottom in the Women’s Super League – the equivalent of the English Premier League – and tied for points in the league table.
The Hammers are also in their first year under new manager Rehanne Skinner.
Mewis would be able to make her WSL debut when West Ham plays its first match of 2024 on Jan. 21 against Tottenham.
The move for the 32-year-old midfielder also brings her in direct competition with her fiancee, Chelsea star Sam Kerr.
The couple had announced their engagement last month and now will be WSL rivals.
The two had recently been discussing potential apartments in London to share during a sitdown with Esquire that was published earlier this month.
Gotham FC could benefit from the departure as they look to repeat as champions next season.
It frees up roster space with the club reportedly aiming to sign several free agents during the offseason, with targets such as midfielders Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett and Crystal Dunn.
