Red Bulls add midfielder Emil Forsberg in splash transfer

The Red Bulls have turned to the Bundesliga again, this time to bolster their playing roster.

Two days after hiring former Hertha Berlin manager Sandro Schwarz as their new head coach, the Red Bulls on Saturday announced the transfer acquisition of RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Emil Forsberg.

“We are very excited to add a player of Emil’s caliber to our club. The amount of experience he has in Europe will be a great addition to our roster,” Red Bulls Head of Sport Jochen Schneider said in a statement. “This transfer showcases the Red Bull philosophy of high-intensity and attacking soccer and the power of our multi-club ecosystem which will benefit our club.

“Emil is an amazing talent with a skillset that will particularly help develop young players and we cannot wait to see him take the pitch at Red Bull Arena in 2024.”

Forsberg received a designated-player deal for three years with an option for 2027.

The 32-year-old had been with Leipzig since 2015, making 323 appearances and winning two German Cups with the side over nine seasons.

Known for his creativity and ability to create scoring chances, Forsberg also has earned 86 caps with the Swedish national team, including a quarterfinal run at the 2018 World Cup.

His 22 assists for Leipzig across all competitions in 2016 mark the third-highest single-season total in Bundesliga history.

The Red Bulls made the playoffs and won a wild-card match over Charlotte before losing to Cincinnati in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Schwarz was brought in to replace Troy Lesesne, who was fired in November.
