Greg Schiano’s Rutgers extension starts with $6.25 million in 2024

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano will remain in Piscataway through the 2030 college football season after he signed a contract extension with the university on Wednesday.

Schiano, in his second stint coaching at Rutgers, had four years left on the eight-year deal that he had signed with the university in 2019.

Under the new contract, he will make $6.25 million in 2024, the school said in the announcement.

Schiano, 57, is the program’s all-time winningest coach, going 86-95 during his two stints leading the football team, first from 2001-11 then returning seven years later.

“This is a great day for Rutgers Athletics,” Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a statement. “In four years, Coach Schiano has transformed our program, this year resulting in bowl eligibility. Continuity is critical in building winning programs. We have the right leader and the right staff to lead the Scarlet Knights in the years ahead.”

The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 6-6 season and are preparing to make an appearance at this year’s Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium against Miami.

The Dec. 28 bowl game is the program’s eighth under Schiano, with Rutgers appearing in six during his first seven years in Piscataway before leaving to take a head coaching job with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Scarlet Knights are 5-2 in bowl games with Schiano at the helm.

Rutgers had started this season 6-2, but dropped its final four games.

However, 2023 still marked one of the Scarlet Knights’ better seasons, and their three Big Ten wins tied a program record for most conference wins in a season.

“Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey,” Schiano said in a statement.
