Flood watch in effect as powerful storm to bring heavy rain, wind to NYC

High winds and flash flooding are expected to batter New York City as the potent storm system responsible for killing six in Tennessee pushes northeast into Sunday afternoon.

The low-pressure center that produced dramatic storms across the South on Saturday will head northeast, strengthening as it nears New York, where 50 million people are under flash flood watch.

“This is the first high wind alert for New York City since 2020,” Fox Meteorologist Seth Darling told The Post, noting that the warning means a greater risk of downed trees or power lines.

Within the tri-state area, high winds are anticipated to produce gusts of up to 50 mph, especially in areas further east, Darling added.

The heaviest rain is expected to begin around 3 p.m. and last until about 11 a.m. Monday, with up to three inches expected to be dumped along the I-95 corridor.

Areas more north, including regions in upstate New York up to Maine, may see up to 5 inches of rain.

Meanwhile, parts of upstate New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts are currently under winter weather warnings and may also see anywhere between 5 and 8 inches of snow during this storm, Darling said.

The precipitation is expected to clear Monday, while strong wind gusts will continue into Tuesday.

New York City Emergency Management wrote on X that a travel advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday as a flood watch is in effect.

“REMINDER: We’re anticipating strong winds and rain Sunday night going into Monday morning. Be prepared,” Mayor Eric Adams wrote online.

The storm is part of a system that wreaked havoc on central Tennessee on Saturday. At least six people were killed, including a child, and over 20 others were injured after an apparent tornado ripped through the region.

Photos shared on social media revealed the extensive damage the tornado left behind, including ravaged houses, a tractor-trailer flipped on its side on a highway and insulation ripped out of building walls.

Officials asked residents to remain in their homes as the search and rescue operation continues.
