A theme park in China meant to rival Disney World is now an eerie, abandoned zombie-like wasteland.
Travel-lover and urban explorer Bob Thissen spent two days adventuring in the shuttered park, which is located in Jiangxi province.
Thissen posts about his many adventures on social media where he boasts hundreds of thousands of followers across platforms including Instagram and TikTok.
“For me, there’s something magical about abandoned theme parks,” he told Caters News Agency.
“What was a bustling and busy place is now eerily quiet; everything is overgrown, and all you can hear are animals scurrying about — it gives off ‘I Am Legend’ or ‘Walking Dead’ vibes,” he shared.
The park first opened in 2014 and boasted over 100 attractions and rides in ten areas, all with different themes.
It was originally meant to give Disney World a run for its money, but instead drained the wallets of locals who said the $31 ticket price was unaffordable for most.
The price of tickets plus the park’s unfavorable location led it to close its doors for good in 2018. The tickets were still much less expensive than those sold at Disney, which today cost — at a minimum — $109 per park, per day.
“According to visitors, the park was also way too remote to get to. The investor who financially backed the park was a top 100 real estate investment company in China; this theme park led to the bankruptcy of that company,” Thissen said.
“I believe it’s too long abandoned to reopen again; there was a huge ‘bubble’ of theme parks. Many have been built, so there is a high level of competition, and only a few are profitable,” he added.
The park has no plans to re-open.
