Florida State in perilous spot with backup QB now a game-time decision

Florida State is already down one quarterback and now might be missing a second ahead of the ACC Championship Game on Saturday against Louisville.

The Seminoles lost 2023 ACC Player of the Year Jordan Travis due to a gruesome leg injury he suffered against North Alabama earlier in November.

Now, backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker — who completed 12 of 25 passes for 134 yards (93 rating) in last week’s regular-season finale win over Florida — is listed as a game-time decision for the ACC title game due to a head injury, the school said Friday.

Rodemaker left the fourth quarter of Florida State’s win over the Gators but quickly returned two plays late and helped engineer a scoring drive.

ESPN reports that Rodemaker hasn’t been a full participant in practice leading up to the ACC Championship Game, and the outlet added that the team will “go through the process” with the redshirt junior and the Seminoles “see what that means for Saturday.”

Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell said Friday that Rodemaker, according to ESPN, passed initial testing on the field against the Gators but began feeling symptoms the next day.

“There’s a process we have to go through and certain benchmarks that we’ll go through as we lead up to the game,” said Norvell, who is in his fourth season at the helm at Florida State. “Then we’ll see where he’s at. But all those guys are ready and they’re prepared.”

Freshman quarterback Brock Glenn is next on the depth chart and could be in line to start if Rodemaker is deemed unready to go.

Glenn has completed 2 of 4 passes this season for 35 yards, while Rodemaker has gone 32-for-56 for 510 yards and five touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Glenn was a four-star recruit out of Tennessee, per 247 Sports, who threw for 3,928 yards and 57 touchdowns during his prep school days.

But both quarterbacks pale in comparison to the injured Travis, who completed 207 of 324 passes for 2,756 yards, 20 touchdowns and two interceptions while also adding seven rushing touchdowns and was in the Heisman conversation before the injury.
