Tommy DeVito spurned Commanders, Patriots to sign with Giants

Tommy DeVito had already handed the Commanders and Patriots losses before beating them on the field these past two weeks.

DeVito spurned the Commanders after going undrafted, turning down “significantly more guaranteed money” in order to sign with the Giants, according to NFL Network.

“To play in Jersey and play for Brian Daboll’s coaching staff, that’s why DeVito decided to play for the Giants,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Sunday morning.

Then, during the period after the Giants waived DeVito before signing him to the practice squad, the Patriots tried to lure away DeVito but he stayed with his hometown team.

It’s safe to say that DeVito’s decision worked out the best for the former Don Bosco quarterback.

While he would have earned more money playing for Washington, there would have been no path to playing time behind potential franchise quarterback Sam Howell.

Howell has thrown every pass for the Commanders this season.

The Patriots, meanwhile, have their quarterback issues and finally appear set to bench Mac Jones leading into a game instead of during the contest.

It appears Bailey Zappe will start this Sunday against the Chargers.

DeVito could have been in the mix to start had he signed with the Patriots, but it’s surely more meaningful for him to start for the franchise in his backyard.

Since his fateful debut in which the Giants essentially didn’t allow him to throw against the Jets, DeVito has played relatively well for a backup quarterback.

He completed 18-of-26 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns to beat Howell and the Commanders, 31-19, on the road in Week 11.

Last week, DeVito did just enough to beat the Patriots, 10-7. He completed 17-of-25 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown in the home victory.

The rookie has completed 66-of-105 passes for 697 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in his five games this season.

DeVito’s next challenge comes on “Monday Night Football” in Week 14 against the Packers at MetLife Stadium.
