Whether or not Bill Belichick is actually on the hot seat, his job security has been a popular talking point this season.
There’s no question that the Patriots are extremely unhappy with their 2-8 start as they head into the bye week, likely out of playoff contention for the 2023 season, after a 10-6 loss in Germany to the woeful Colts.
“Well, I just do the best I can every day,” Belichick said regarding his job security.
After their 2-7 start, prior to the loss to the Colts, Patriots owner Robert Kraft voiced his disappointment with the 2023 Patriots, a far cry from the consistent success he experienced while Belichick coached Tom Brady in the franchise’s previous era.
“This is our thirtieth year that I’ve had the privilege of owning this team, and I’ve never been 2-7,” Kraft said before Sunday’s game. “So it’s really disappointing and I hoped that things would be a lot better, as I know our fan base did. And I hope today is a chance to reset and make this a much better year. This isn’t what we were expecting to happen this year.”
Asked about Kraft’s comments, Belichick said, “I think we all feel that way.”
He continued, “I think we’re all disappointed in the season. But we’ll keep going here. Seven games to go. Be ready to go [Nov. 26] against the Giants.”
With 331 career regular and postseason wins, Belichick sits 16 behind Don Shula’s all-time record for coaches.
However, he’s also five losses shy of Tom Landry’s record of 178 career defeats.
Mac Jones was benched again Sunday against the Colts after completing 15-of-20 passes for 170 yards and an interception, but Bailey Zappe threw an interception on the final drive to seal their defeat.
The offense didn’t score a touchdown despite outgaining the Colts, 340-264.
