Jets’ Garrett Wilson beside himself over ‘inexcusable’ fumble in loss to Chargers

Even the Jets’ top players on offense made mistakes in Monday’s 27-6 loss to the Chargers.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson fumbled in the first quarter, one of the early signs that this would be a long night for the Jets’ offense.

On the Jets’ second possession of the game, they had the ball on the Chargers 44. Zach Wilson hit Garrett Wilson near the sideline and Chargers safety Alohi Gilman knocked the ball loose.

Derwin James recovered for the Chargers just before the ball went out of bounds.

“Just being sloppy with my ball handling, man. I’ve got to be better. That’s inexcusable,” Garrett Wilson said. “I felt like we had something rolling and who knows how the game plays out if I don’t make that mistake. I’m going to make sure to clean that up because that’s inexcusable.”

Wilson finished the game with seven catches for 80 yards, but walked away disappointed in his performance.

“I felt like I had a matchup that I could win more times than not. We’ve got to go do it,” Garrett Wilson said. “It hasn’t happened. It’s as disappointing as it gets being a part of the offense. I’m a part of it. I have to look in the mirror tonight and figure out how I can do better. There’s no finger pointing. I have to do better.”

First-round pick DE Will McDonald IV had his first career sack in the game, getting credit for half a sack in the third quarter.

Veteran WR Randall Cobb was inactive for the second straight week. Cobb has been dealing with a shoulder injury but he practiced fully this week and was a healthy scratch.

The full list of inactives were: Cobb, DE Carl Lawson, RB Israel Abanikanda, WR Jason Brownlee, OL Dennis Kelly, DB Jarrick Bernard-Converse and LB Chazz Surratt.

Rookie LB Zaire Barnes was active for the first time this season.

The Jets elevated OL Xavier Newman and WR Malik Taylor before Monday night’s game with the Chargers.

Newman was a hero in the win over the Giants last week.

He ended up playing center after the first two Jets centers to play in the game were injured.

Newman was the backup center Monday night with Joe Tippmann back in the lineup.

The Jets signed OL Jacob Hanson to the practice squad and released OL Jason Poe from the practice squad.
