Could this drink end hangovers forever? Remedy can prevent, sober people up in an hour, creators say
It’s the most wonderful wine of the year.
A new drink that claims to sober you up in less than an hour and prevent hangovers is expected to launch in time for the holidays — so you don’t have to worry too much about ending up on the naughty list.
Safety Shot is the “first patented beverage on Earth” that helps people bounce back by decreasing blood alcohol content and “boosting clarity,” according to a press release.
“We are confident that Safety Shot will become a blockbuster product creating a new category in the beverage industry,” Safety Shot’s CEO Brian John said in a statement.
However, Safety Shot has not listed exactly what the beverage is made of, calling it merely an “extensive mineral and ingredient combination.”
The Post has reached out to Safety Shot reps for comment.
A self-published study of the Safety Shot beverage published in October showed that the drink reduced blood alcohol content within 30 minutes.
“The results of this volunteer study confirm the findings of a number of volunteer studies and clearly demonstrate that Safety Shot reduces blood alcohol content at a statistically significant level and did so at a much faster rate than the rate of people who did not drink Safety Shot,” Safety Shot’s chief scientific officer Dr. Glynn Wilson said.
However, emergency medicine physician Dr. Thomas Waters told the Cleveland Clinic that there is no cure for a hangover but time.
“There’s no magic pill, no miracle cure to make a hangover go away,” Waters said. “Your body has to catch up and metabolize the alcohol you consumed.”
Similarly, Dr. Ed Boyer, a medical toxicologist at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, told Time Magazine in 2017 that hangovers are still mysterious to medical professionals.
“I don’t think anybody can really tell you with a great degree of honesty what causes a hangover,” he said. “The bottom line is nobody knows for sure what causes it, so we don’t have a good cure.”
The supposed hangover quencher is supposed to be consumed as soon as you finish drinking and targets the central nervous system for “rapid alcohol detoxification.”
According to the press release, there are four mechanisms of action (MOAs) to repair “all things that alcohol impairs”: sobering a person up; preventing the gut from absorbing residual alcohol; reducing effects of alcohol that has been absorbed by blood and maintaining hydration.
There’s also a fifth “feel good” aspect of Safety Shot, which “no other drink or supposed remedy claims” — improving mental and physical well-being.
It’s unclear what exactly is in the drink, but the wellness and functional beverage company claims the formula speeds up the process of alcohol detoxification “through a tailored selection of all-natural vitamins, minerals, and nootropics that assist with rehydration and mental clarity.”
The beverage will be available the first week of December 2023 through the company’s website and on Amazon, and the company expects to start business sales of the Safety Shot to distributors, retailers, restaurants and bars in the first quarter of 2024.
The company is also developing a more concentrated, prescription version of the Safety Shot formula to be used as a detox product for alcohol poisoning.
