Jimmy Garoppolo’s starting quarterback role with Raiders could be in jeopardy after ‘bad day’

It appears the Jimmy Garoppolo era in Las Vegas could be coming to a screeching halt.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels did not give a definitive answer when asked about Garoppolo’s status as the team’s starting quarterback following a disheartening 26-14 loss to the Lions on “Monday Night Football.”

“I’m not going to talk about that right now,” McDaniels said.

Garoppolo, who signed a three-year, $72.5 million deal with the Raiders in the offseason, completed 10-of-21 attempts Monday for 126 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception.

He leads the league with nine interceptions this season.

“Today was a bad day, there’s no sugarcoating it. It is what it is. So, I’ve just got to play better. Myself, I have to play better. A bunch of little things that will solve a lot of problems,” said Garoppolo, who missed the Raiders’ Week 7 loss to the Bears due to a back injury.

“It starts with me. We’ve got to be better, and we will be.”

It’s been a frustrating season for the Raiders, who stand at 3-5.

Prior to Monday’s clash in Detroit, McDaniels — now in his second season as head coach — opened the floor to players during a recent team meeting.

Defensive end Maxx Crosby and wide receiver Davante Adams were among the players who spoke, NFL.com reported Sunday, in a gathering that was described as “cathartic” and “a much-needed opportunity to get things off their chest and reset emotionally.”

The good vibes did not last one game, though.

Adams, who previously expressed his frustration about the Raiders’ offense and his lack of opportunities, slammed his helmet on the sideline in the final minutes of Monday’s game after an overthrown pass from Garoppolo.

He was targeted just seven times and had just one catch for 11 yards. Garoppolo missed a wide-open Adams multiple times in the second half when the receiver had chances for big plays.

“I honestly … I don’t know what to say at this moment,” Adams said postgame, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

“I truly don’t. I wish I had the words to say something that’s not gonna get blown up in the media or taken out of context.”

Adams was traded to the Raiders in 2022, a move that reunited him with his friend and former college teammate, Derek Carr.

Months later, Carr was released by the Raiders and is now under center for the Saints.

With Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline looming, all eyes will certainly be on the Raiders and Adams, specifically.
