The Post’s college football rankings, Heisman watch following Week 8

The Post’s college football rankings following Week 8.

Top 10

1. Georgia (7-0) (Last week: 1)

The Bulldogs schedule is starting to stiffen, with games against Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee over the next month. Georgia will either hit its stride or will see its winning streak — currently at 24 games — come to an end.

2. Florida State (7-0) (2)

Duke had a two-score lead and all the momentum, exactly the situation Florida State wanted to avoid. It didn’t matter. The Seminoles overwhelmed the Blue Devils’ stifling defense, piling up 420 yards of offense and 38 points. It was the latest indication this team is a legitimate title contender.

3. Ohio State (7-0) (5)

Ohio State’s defense has held them back the past two seasons, but this year, it has propelled them. In the Buckeyes’ two best wins, over Penn State and Notre Dame, they have allowed a combined 26 points.

4. Michigan (8-0) (5)

The upcoming bye week will be Michigan’s toughest opponent yet.

5. Oklahoma (7-0) (3)

So much for that soft landing spot I mentioned last week. The Sooners nearly became Central Florida’s first Big 12 win, needing a fourth-quarter rally to avoid a disastrous loss.

6. Washington (7-0) (4)

Arizona State’s only win had come over Southern Utah. Undefeated Washington had just knocked off previously unbeaten Oregon. So, of course, the Huskies struggled with the cellar-dwelling Sun Devils in by far their worst performance of the year.

7. Oregon (6-1) (8)

There was no Washington hangover for Oregon, just a sound and commanding win over Washington State highlighted by a 248-57 edge in rushing yards. This was dominance up front.

8. Texas (6-1) (10)

The Longhorns survived on Saturday at Houston. They were outgained and trailed entering the fourth quarter. Two forced turnovers saved Texas from a killer loss.

9. Alabama (7-1) (9)

I’m buying the Crimson Tide as a playoff contender. They have shown impressive resolve after that ugly home loss to Texas, and produced their best half of the season Saturday, reeling off 27 straight points after trailing Tennessee by 13 points at halftime.

10. Penn State (6-1) (7)

Seven straight losses now to Ohio State and 11 of 12. A 3-16 record against top-10 teams under James Franklin. All you need to know about the state of Penn State football.

Heisman Watch

(in alphabetical order)

QB Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma

Three more touchdown passes for Gabriel, this time against his former school, Central Florida, as his fantastic season continues. He’s now 10 touchdowns shy of equaling his career-high of 34 set for UCF in 2020.

WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

That’s now three straight 100-yard receiving games with a touchdown in each for the junior wideout who accounted for 162 of Ohio State’s 363 total yards in its win over Penn State on Saturday.

QB Bo Nix, Oregon

Nix has now produced nine straight games with multiple touchdown passes, and has done so in 14 of his last 15 contests. That’s consistency.

QB Michael Penix Jr., Washington

One poor performance, particularly in a win, won’t ruin Penix’s Heisman hopes. But he needs to bounce back immediately.

QB Jordan Travis, Florida State

It’s starting to feel like an inevitability that Travis will receive an invite to New York City in December, and he absolutely deserves it at this point.
