Decorated Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton is recovering at home after she was hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia, according to one of her daughters.
McKenna Kelley shared the positive update Monday on Instagram.
“Mom is HOME and in recovery mode. We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps,” Kelley wrote in the post.
“We are overwhelmed with the love and support from everyone. Grateful doesn’t scrape the surface of the posture of our hearts.”
Kelley concluded her note by thanking those who offered support during this challenging time.
“Thank you Jesus, thank you doctors and nurses, thank you to this loving community of support,” she shared.
Retton, 55, won five medals in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, including the gold in the individual all-around competition.
Earlier this month, Retton’s daughter revealed that the former Olympian has been “fighting for her life” with the unspecified rare form of pneumonia.
Monday’s update comes after Shayla Kelly Schrepfer, one of Retton’s other daughters, said last week that she had endured a “scary setback.”
“We were so excited, seeing so much progress and then yesterday, we had a pretty scary setback,” Schrepfer said. “She is still in ICU, and we’re just working through some things as far as her setback goes.”
Following her Olympics success, Retton had a number of TV and film appearances, including a role in an episode of “Baywatch,” and the 1994 movie, “Naked Gun 33 ¹/₃: The Final Insult.”
A Spotfund page set up to help with Retton’s medical bills has raised nearly $460,000.
Among her numerous accolades, Retton was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
