Socialist Rep. Jamaal Bowman pulls fire alarm as Dems try to delay vote on GOP stopgap spending bill

Socialist Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) pulled the fire alarm in a House office building Saturday as Democrats tried to delay a bipartisan vote on a Republican stopgap spending bill.

The wild incident in the Cannon Building was caught on camera and confirmed by several witnesses.

“An investigation into why it was pulled is underway,” a spokesperson for the GOP-controlled Administration Committee told The Post, confirming the incident.

As Bowman took heat for the incident, he insisted to reporters afterward that he pulled the alarm handle because he thought it would open the door.

“I was rushing to make a vote, I was trying to get through a door. I thought the alarm would open the door,” he said.

“I didn’t mean to cause confusion . . . I didn’t know it was going to trip the whole building.”

He also added: “I want to be very clear, this was not me, in any way, trying to delay the vote. It was the exact opposite — I was trying urgently to get to a vote, which I ultimately did.”

The move came as Democrats were desperately employing tactics to delay the vote, including Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (Brooklyn/Queens) using his privilege to make a speech and forcing a vote on a motion to adjourn.

Bowman said he “met with the Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police” and explained his side of the story, adding: “My hope is that no one will make more of this than what it was.”

The far-left lawmaker’s political opponents, however, weren’t in the mood to hear any excuses, with some saying he could be guilty of a felony.

Staten Island GOP Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ office told The Post she would move to have Bowman expelled from the chamber.

“NY Democrat Jamaal Bowman literally pulled a fire alarm to stall and prevent our efforts to force a vote to keep the federal government open. Pathetic. Criminal investigation needs to happen,” said upstate GOP Congressman Nick Langworthy.

Creating a false fire alarm is a misdemeanor in the District of Columbia and punishable by up to six months in jail.

“No one in this country is above the law,” Bowman himself said just months ago in tweet attacking former president Trump and applauding his various indictments.

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik claimed that Bowman’s stunt amounted to a “felony.”

In addition to the false report emergency misdemeanor charge, pulling the fire alarm could also possibly constitute illegal obstruction of congressional proceedings — a federal felony, according to the Washington Examiner.

Bowman could be also potentially be charged with obstruction of justice under D.C. law, which includes “corruptly, or by threats of force, any way obstructs or impedes or endeavors to obstruct or impede the due administration of justice in any official proceeding,” according to the outlet.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would have a “discussion” with Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries about the Bowman situation.

“But this should not go without punishment. This is an embarrassment,” McCarthy said in a press conference Saturday.

The speaker added that he would call for a probe into the matter by the House Ethics Committee.

“This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school. To pull the fire alarm to disrupt proceedings when we are trying to draft legislation to AVERT A SHUTDOWN is pathetic…even for members of the socialist squad,” Malliotakis wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) ripped the far-left pol for disrupting Saturday’s activities before demanding that the Department of Justice prosecute him for obstruction of an official proceeding — the same charge that has been used against January 6 rioters.

“The Democrats literally will do anything to shut OUR government down because billions aren’t going to their favorite country: Ukraine,” the conservative firebrand wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Capitol Police confirmed to The Post that a fire alarm was pulled at the Cannon Building just after noon and that the building was evacuated before it was determined that there was no threat.

The Post has reached out to Bowman for comment.
