WASHINGTON — Carlos Carrasco’s season is over following a freak weight-room accident — and his Mets career also likely has come to an end.
The veteran right-hander was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a fractured fifth finger on his right hand. He broke the finger two days earlier when a 50-pound dumbbell landed on it, according to manager Buck Showalter.
Carrasco had a pin inserted into the finger Tuesday, according to Showalter. The normal timeline for recovery is 4-6 weeks, and the Mets’ season is scheduled to conclude in 3 ½ weeks.
The 36-year-old Carrasco, who will be a free agent after this season, was removed from the rotation last week because of poor performance and placed on waivers, but he went unclaimed. Carrasco posted a 6.80 ERA in 20 starts this season.
“He’s going to pitch again next year for somebody, we’ll see if it’s for us or not,” Showalter said before the Mets’ 11-5 win over the Nationals. “We know that he’s done for the season.”
Showalter said the accident occurred about an hour before the game Sunday, when the pitcher placed the dumbbell in a precarious position during a workout.
Before he could adjust it, the weight fell on his hand.
Sam Coonrod was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Carrasco’s roster spot.
He faced five batters in the eighth inning and retired none, allowing two singles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. He was charged with four earned runs, increasing his ERA from 1.69 to 8.44 in eight appearances this season.
Carrasco had a solid season for the Mets in 2022, pitching to a 3.97 ERA in 29 starts, but struggled from the start this year.
Included was an IL stint in April after he received a cortisone injection in his elbow.
“[Carrasco] had some good outings this year, but not nearly as many as he would have liked or we would have liked,” Showalter said.
Jose Butto is the Mets’ scheduled starter for the series finale Wednesday against the Nationals.
The right-hander was recalled from Syracuse on Friday.
Edwin Diaz traveled with the Mets for the first time this season and is continuing to work toward a potential late-season return from surgery to repair his right patellar tendon.
The Mets have remained noncommittal on whether Diaz will be allowed to pitch this season.
“He is still right where he to be,” Showalter said. “He is still progressing.”
Showalter noted the “aggressive” schedule the Mets set for a potential Diaz return this year was under the premise the All-Star reliever could boost the team in the postseason.
“With there not being October baseball so far, that is the debate that will happen at some point,” Showalter said. “We haven’t gotten there yet. We’ll see how he progresses the rest of September.”
All four of the Mets’ heralded rookies — Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio, Mark Vientos and Brett Baty — were in the starting lineup together for the first time on Tuesday.
