Gleyber Torres’ latest bad error strikes at costly Yankees moment

As if the Yankees needed another lowlight this season to add to their reel.

The Yankees lost in rough fashion Thursday afternoon when the Detroit Tigers won thanks to a bad throw by Gleyber Torres.

The game had been tied at 3 in the bottom of the 10th when Zack Short hit into a force to the pitcher.

Jonathan Loaisiga got the out at second, but the throw by Torres went way wide of first and Kerry Carpenter easily scored to win the game for Detroit.

The Yankees attempted to challenge the slide, but after the umpires reviewed the play it was confirmed and the game was over.

The errant throw spoiled what should have been a successful afternoon for the Yankees after Anthony Volpe had hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to erase the 3-0 deficit.

Thursday wasn’t the first time that Torres cost the Yankees due to an error.

In a loss to the Cubs ahead of the All-Star Break, Torres booted a potential double-play ball that led Chicago to score three runs in the seventh inning.

Another Torres miscue cost the Yankees in a 10-inning loss to the Boston Red Sox on June 11.

Friday’s heartbreaker snapped a three-game winning streak that the Yankees had been on after winning the first three games of the series.

The Bombers had been looking for their first series sweep since they took three straight games over the Kansas City Royals in late July.

The Yankees are 65-69 and 10 ½ games back of a Wild Card spot in the American League.
