Large ice chunk falls from sky, damages Massachusetts home

This was really an icebreaker.

A large chunk of ice — estimated to be 15 to 20 pounds — fell from the sky and hit a Massachusetts home Sunday night, damaging its roof.

Homeowners Jeff Ilg and his wife, Amelia Rainville, believe that the piece of ice — which did not harm the couple or their two children — fell from an airplane traveling to Boston Logan International Airport.

Their Shirley, Massachusetts, home is about 50 miles northeast of Logan, one of the busiest airports in the country. One of Logan’s flight paths crosses directly above.

“We heard an explosion, basically,” Ilg recalled. “The loudest pop, bang I’ve ever heard.”

Immediately following that alarming sound, they heard debris rolling down the roof onto a lower section, and assumed, at first, it had been struck by lightning.

When the pair ventured outside to see what happened, Ilg spotted the giant block of ice on their back step, and debris scattered throughout the backyard and roof.

“I had no idea what this was,” he said.

“It was hard to wrap my head around it. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky,” Ilg told Boston 25 News.

Rainville called the police and then Ilg found the hole in the roof.

“Sure enough it was in there and it was big,” he said.

The spot where the ice slammed into the roof had damage about 18 inches to 2 feet in diameter, but inside the roof, the damage was even greater.

They collected 10 pounds of ice in bags, and there was still a lot more to gather.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it’s investigating.
